Spain agrees to extradite controversial antivirus pioneer John McAfee

Spanish newspaper El Pais reports that John McAfee, 75, tech billionaire and eccentric at the center of a high-profile murder case in Belize some years ago, was found dead in a prison cell in Barcelona, Spain, this evening.

USA federal prosecutors charged the 75-year-old with evading taxes after failing to report income made from promoting cryptocurrencies while doing consulting work, as well as income derived from speaking engagements and selling film rights to his life story.

An indictment filed by prosecutors in Tennessee and later publicly released by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) in October 2020 alleges that McAfee attempted to "evade" the US Internal Revenue Service by "concealing" assets, such as real estate property and a yacht, by placing them in the name of "others".

'I believe the charges are politically motivated'. "I am hoping that the Spanish court will see the injustice of this", he said, adding "the United States wants to use me as an example".

He twice ran long-shot bids for USA president and was a participant in Libertarian Party presidential debates in 2016.

In Washington, the IRS did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier this month, McAfee testified in court that the tax-related charges filed in the United States were politically motivated, and that if he were extradited back to the USA, he would remain behind bars for the rest of his life. He claimed he has paid millions in dollar as taxes to United States govt. He also was charged in a cryptocurrency fraud case in NY.

His death occurred after a Spanish high court authorized McAfee's extradition to the US.

The 75-year-old was found dead in his cell in the Brians 2 penitentiary near Barcelona "apparently from suicide", a spokeswoman for the prison system in the northeastern Catalonia region said, confirming media reports.

The US also charged McAfee for failing to pay taxes on his cryptocurrency earnings.
