Open for Summer million dollar vaccination lottery details announced

All Albertans aged 18 and older are eligible to register for the announced three draws, the first of which will happen on Day 1 of the Stage 3 reopening.

"This lottery will help us cross that 70% threshold so we can reopen and stay open", said Alberta Premier Jason Kenney in a news release.

The "Open for Summer Lottery" is being implemented to encourage more Albertans to get vaccinated.

Knowing that uptake for first doses would wane, the Alberta government had been actively brainstorming creative solutions, finally landing on the mega-prize lottery modelled after similar draws in the United States and Manitoba.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro said the lottery will pay for itself by clamping down on case rates. More registration details will be revealed this week, and the window for taking part will remain open for one week after the province reaches the 70% mark of individuals that have received at least one dose of the vaccination.

"There always will be some who will never get a vaccine of any kind".

Officials say they are exploring winning options for those who are under 18 years of age and have been vaccinated.

"We need to just nudge those who haven't gotten around to getting their vaccines yet", Kenney said in the video posted Saturday.
"This is an investment in Albertans and in our province's future".

Officials provided details on the Open for Summer vaccination lottery which will provide three lucky winners with one million dollars each.

But, just over 3,500 new first doses were administered on Sunday, the lowest since late February according to the latest provincial data. "Currently, we are 48,361 first dose appointments away from reaching that goal".

The second, 2nd dose lottery victor of one million dollars will be announced on August, 31 with registration closing on August 24.

As of June 12, 3,384,026 doses of the vaccine were administered in Alberta, and 767,586 residents have been fully immunized with two doses.

The second prize, which will be drawn from people who have both of their vaccine doses, will be drawn in August. The final draw, also for fully vaccinated Albertans, has a tentative date of September 30.

Draws for additional non-cash prizes will take place on various dates between June 14 and September 30, the province said.
