Queen Elizabeth hosts President Biden at Windsor Castle

U.S. President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will have tea with Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle on Sunday at the end of the G7 summit and as he wraps up the British leg of his first worldwide trip since taking office.

The monarch, 95, received the Bidens for tea at her historic residence, about 30 miles west of London.

He confirmed he's invited the Queen to the White House.

The event comes in the middle of a busy few days for the Queen, who appeared publicly yesterday alongside other senior royals at a reception for leaders as part of the G7 Summit.

They greeted the Queen on a dais in Windsor's quadrangle before a Guard of Honour gave a royal salute as the U.S. national anthem was played.

In that time, President Biden inspected the guard of honour whilst Her Majesty and Dr Biden watched on.

The role of escorting a visiting head of state to inspect the troops was usually carried out by the Duke of Edinburgh, before he retired in 2017.

The Queen has not travelled overseas since 2015 when she went to Malta with her late husband Prince Philip.

After taking private afternoon tea with the queen on Sunday, Biden is traveling to nearby Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, before heading to Switzerland on Wednesday for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The whole visit lasted just over an hour and is believed to have overrun by 10 minutes.

And he said she'd asked about Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I said we could fit the White House in the courtyard", the president disclosed to reporters waiting on the Heathrow tarmac for news of the conversation. She was very generous.

Biden, who first met the queen in 1982 as a Democratic senator for DE, said following the meeting that she was "extremely gracious" and that she reminded him of his mother in terms of "the look of her and the generosity".

The visit comes after a hard year for the monarch and just three days after what would have been her husband's 100th birthday. He added: "Anyway, she was very gracious".

On Saturday, she was back in Windsor for a military parade to mark her official birthday, the first one she has marked without Philip.

Traditionally held at Horse Guards Parade in central London, this year's ceremony was held at Windsor Castle and scaled back with social distancing on place for the second year in a row due to COVID restrictions. President Biden has cited his mother Catherine, who died in 2010 at the age of 92, as the "profound influence" on his life, helping him to overcome a stutter in his youth and organising the coffee morning fundraisers when he first ran for the Senate in 1972 at the age of 29. She has since met almost every American president (Lyndon Johnson was the exception) who served during her 69 years on the throne.

In 2019 the Queen met then President Donald Trump at Buckingham Palace.
