President Macron is SLAPPED in the face during walkabout in France

French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped by a man at a receiving line as he came out of a professional high school in southeastern France, according to a video circulating on social media.

The President's security detail quickly intervened when the man slapped Mr Macron on Tuesday as he approached a crowd of onlookers standing behind a metal fence. As of now, two people have been detained by the officials to investigate the attack.

Emmanuel Macron has been slapped across the face during a walkabout to greet voters in southern France.

The incident took place in the village of Tain-l'Hermitage in the Drome region of the country.

"Around 13:15, the president got back into his auto after visiting a high school and came back out because onlookers were calling out to him", added the prefecture. "He went to meet them and that's where the incident happened".

The French president began a grand tour of France last week ahead of regional elections and next year's presidential vote, with the trip expected to include around a dozen stops over the next two months.

Shortly before being slapped, Macron had been asked to comment on recent remarks from far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon who suggested at the weekend that next year's election would be manipulated. "Respect for the institutions of the Republic and its representatives is a cardinal principle of our democratic life".

Prime Minister Jean Castex called for a "Republican awakening, adding: "Democracy is debate, dialogue, expressing legitimate disagreements, but it can not in any way be violence, verbal aggression or physical aggression".

Macron is now on a "Tour de France" to 'take the pulse of the country, ' according to the Elysee Palace.
