OPP search for missing boater in Lake St. Clair

The body of an 8-year-old boy who had gone missing Saturday afternoon in Turkey Point, Ont., was found after nearly a full day of searching the waters of Lake Erie, according to provincial police.

Police say the search is continuing and that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

"It was determined that an eight-year-old child was seen swimming in the waters of Lake Erie off of Cedar Drive when the child abandoned the floating raft that they were on and attempted to swim back to shore", Sanchuk said.

The boy's body was found about 10 metres off the shore in the town, a popular destination for beachgoers across Norfolk County.

"The identity of the deceased is not being released pending notification of next of kin and I will not be answering any further questions today to give time for the family to grieve", Sanchuk said.

Officials say a kayaker came across the boat at a sandbar and called police around 3:30 p.m.

Family members contacted police when they were unable to find their son, police said. He also thanked the residents of Turkey Point who provided comfort and assistance to the grieving family.

An OPP helicopter along with emergency rescue services out of Trenton, Ont., were brought in to assist in the search. "There were flares over the lake all night as they continued to search".

"It's a eerie feeling", Simon said.
