Active shooter at California fire station, firefighter dead

At least one firefighter was killed and another was injured after a gunman opened fire at a Los Angeles County Fire Department station in a community north of Los Angeles on Tuesday morning, local media reported, citing authorities.

The gunfire rang out around 10:55 Los Angeles County Fire Department station 81, at 8710 W. Sierra Highway, fire officials said in a tweet.

As the fire burned and sheriff's deputies amassed in the neighborhood, a man fitting the suspect's description was spotted in the backyard of the home with what deputies in a hovering helicopter described as an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head. As of the press conference, authorities were not yet able to confirm whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, as the home was still on fire and the investigation is in its preliminary stages. The Daily Mail reports that another firefighter has been shot multiple times. KTLA-TV reported at the time that officials indicated the injured man, a captain, was shot once.

Officials said there were four people on shift at the time of the shooting, including the fire captain, specialist, and two firefighters.

The fire department says "it is with heavy hearts that the LACoFD confirmed that a tragic shooting" has occurred. The body was seen in a seated, slumped- over position inside an apparently empty swimming pool.

According to sheriff's Lt. Brandon Dean, witnesses to the shooting were quickly able to identify the gunman and his vehicle to responding deputies, who tracked him to his home in the 2600 block of Bent Spur Drive in Acton. "And as a fire chief, I've dealt with a lot of death and a lot of fallen members of my department".

Authorities believe the suspect is a "disgruntled employee" who reportedly fled the scene and allegedly lit his own home on fire following the shooting. And I've always prayed we would never have a line of duty death.

There was no immediate word on a motive for the shooting. "I never thought it would occur in this fashion". The house, located in Agua Dulce, has been set on fire. "At my direction, flags will be flown half-staff at all County buildings".
