Bladen County spared from overnight deadly tornado that hit Brunswick County

The Southwest Power Pool, a group of utilities covering 14 states, imposed rolling two-hour blackouts to ease the extreme demand for heat and electricity, saying they were "a last resort to preserve the reliability of the electric system as a whole". Some utilities said they were starting blackouts, while others urged customers to reduce power usage.

Texas officials requested 60 generators from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and planned to prioritise hospitals and nursing homes.

Several cities had record lows: in Minnesota, the Hibbing/Chisholm weather station registered minus 38F.

At 5:16 a.m. Tuesday, the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office reported northbound lanes of USA 17 have been closed from Thomasboro Road to Ocean Isle Beach Road because of downed power lines and traffic is being diverted with assistance from BCSO deputies. Louisiana State Police reported that it had investigated almost 75 weather-related crashes caused by a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain in the past 24 hours.
