Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine bomb threat: Police respond to 'suspicious object' at factory

A bomb disposal team has been called to the factory in which the Oxford vaccine is made after a suspicious package was reported.

The broadcaster said a cordon had been put in place near the plant of the Pharmaceutical company, with the public instructed to stay away from the spot.

Colleagues from the Royal Logistics Corp Bomb Disposal Unit attended and examined the package to make sure it was safe to handle.

"We are immensely proud to have been selected to partner with the United Kingdom government on this project", Ravi Limaye, managing director, said when the state contract was first announced.

Police in northern Wales are responding to an ongoing incident after a suspicious package was received at a key plant in the U.K.'s vaccine supply chain.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said that they were working to ensure the safety of those on the site and the vaccines.

He thanked the security staff who are on-site to ensure the safety of the precious vaccine supply stored there.

Update: An official update circulated just after 4:20PM states "affected roads and premises on Wrexham Industrial Estate have now reopened" and "the manufacture of Covid-19 vaccine can now resume". "Further updates will, I am sure, come in due course".

Ash Road has also been closed in both directions between Bryn Lane and Abbey Road.

All employees were evacuated from the Wockhardt site, which employs around 400 people at Wrexham Industrial Estate, on Wednesday. "All relevant authorities were immediately notified and engaged".

"The safety of our employees and business continuity remain of paramount importance".

Local police confirmed that a bomb disposal unit was on site and advised the public to avoid the area.

"We are now dealing with an ongoing incident on the Wrexham Industrial Estate", a spokesperson said.
