Norway adjusts vaccine advice after elderly deaths, but is not alarmed

"Most people have experienced the expected side effects of the vaccine, such as nausea and vomiting, fever, local reactions at the injection site, and worsening of their underlying condition", a statement from the Norwegian Medicines Agency said.

More than 42,000 inoculations of either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine have been given to Norwegians so far, according to figures from Our World in Data.

Hipkins said this means regulator Medsafe will go through a "fast track" vaccine process, but will not need to give jabs like the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine emergency approval.

Norway has expressed concern about the safety of the corona vaccine made by USA company Pfizer Inc as 29 elderly people died after being vaccinated.

"We are closely monitoring this situation as well as the results of the vaccine rollout out in other countries, including reported reactions and the overall safety profile of the vaccine".

"This includes the frequency of some reactions, the severity, and any previously unknown reactions".

The European Medicines Agency, which assesses and supervises medicinal products in the European Union, has said that it would examine safety reports submitted by all companies authorised to supply vaccines to the EU every month, and that Pfizer's report would be taken up later this month. "It is quite clear that these vaccines have very little risk, with a small exception for the frailest patients", Steinar Madsen, medical director with the agency, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

Earlier this week, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said that "any side effects of the vaccine will be outweighed by a reduced risk of becoming seriously ill with Covid-19 for elderly, frail people".

It is learnt that Norwegian authorities have probed 13 of the deaths so far and concluded that common adverse reactions of mRNA vaccines, such as fever, nausea, and diarrhoea, may have caused death of some elderly patients. "For those who have a very short remaining life span anyway, the benefit of the vaccine may be marginal or irrelevant".

"Anyone in an aged care facility is usually very frail and also has multiple illnesses".

At least 13 people in Israel suffered mild facial paralysis after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, the Health Ministry reported.

In total, more than 57,000 cases and 500 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Norway, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Across the world, officials expect deaths and other severe side effects to be reported after any mass vaccination campaign given the huge numbers of people involved.

Of the 325,000 caregivers in the province, 94,318 have been given the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. "[But] we don't believe at this time that there is any direct connection to the vaccine", The New York Times, which first reported the death, quoted Pfizer as saying in a statement.

Norwegian officials say 29 citizens died after getting the Covid-19 jab and their deaths are now being investigated.
