Lucasfilm Games and Ubisoft Announce Open-World Star Wars Game

However, the first title announced by the company wasn't set in a galaxy far far away. "We get no shortage of folks knocking on our door, wanting to play with our toys", said Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games. "And that's going to continue throughout the next year or so, where we're going to continue to announce projects that are more representative of the legacy of the old Lucasfilm Games that we're now trying to live up to". But Lucasfilm Games will also help expand the roster of Star Wars titles with the announcement of a new story-driven, open-world game from Massive Entertainment, the Sweden-based game studio that falls under Ubisoft, creators of video game franchises such as Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Far Cry, Ghost Recon, and The Division. In the meantime, it sounds like EA will still be producing some Star Wars games in future - with a Fallen Order sequel likely, though not officially confirmed yet. That's an enticing prospect - not only looking to offer a different type of Star Wars game than the multiplayer-focused Battlefront titles, the Dark Souls-esque approach to adventure gaming in Jedi: Fallen Order, and the space-combat of Squadrons, but from a developer who offered an intriguing combination of story missions seamlessly blended with multiplayer environments in The Division games.

Wired asked Lucasfilm to comment on why EA's exclusivity deal had finished but did not receive a specific reply. We wouldn't expect too many details to drop anytime soon.

"We're really excited about an opportunity to work with the team at Massive, led by David Polfeldt and the creative director, Julian Gerighty". Then yesterday we learned that a brand new Indiana Jones game is now in the works over at Bethesda. As of right now, everything from the game's setting to its character pool is far from set in stone.

Star Wars Game Announced

Numerous titles EA listed in its statement were featured in a sizzle reel announcing the new rebranding of Star Wars Games as Lucasfilm Games.

We'll have to wait and see if there's any truth to that statement though. With a huge array of Star Wars media coming to Disney+, we wouldn't be surprised if this was just the start of Lucasfilm Games' empire.
