Hyundai Kona N confirmed for Australia

Set to go on sale locally mid-2021, the Kona N will join a facelifted i30N and new i20N hot hatch due in the second quarter of the year.

Automobile manufacturer Hyundai is preparing to present the New Kona N model, which it calls "Hot SUV", as the brand's first high-performance crossover.

No manual transmission is mentioned for the Kona N but it's worth noting the Veloster N was introduced with a six-speed manual and remains available with such a gearbox.

"We're excited to expand the recipe for success we've developed with the i30 N and, most recently, with the i20 N to one of our most popular SUVs on the market today", said Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, vice-president of marketing and product at Hyundai Motor Europe.

2022 Hyundai Kona N Teased Under Camo, First Specs Released

The teaser campaign for the Hyundai Kona N is kicking into high gear as the company has released new pictures and details about the upcoming model.

The Kona N will find its technical basis in the i30 N's 2-litre Theta engine, which will produce the same 278bhp as in the now updated hatchback.

If Hyundai manages to pair this N powertrain with all-wheel-drive, launches from a dead stop will be very entertaining, indeed. Also unconfirmed is whether the Kona N will be FWD or AWD, though perhaps clues to its AWD underpinnings lie in the decision to offer AWD only and in the teaser, where we see the Kona N being driven hard on a dirt track, and further in the way it squats under acceleration, as well as the way the car's attitude on corner entry.

The automaker has officially confirmed that the Kona N would be getting a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine burning gasoline in tandem with an eight-speed dual-wet-clutch transmission. The high-performance N brand already has cars like the i30 N and the i20 N.
