Infectiousness peaks early in Covid patients: Lancet study

The researchers included 98 studies that had five or more participants, cohort studies, and randomised controlled trials, 79 focussed on SARS-CoV-2, 73 of which included hospitalised patients only, eight on SARS-CoV, and 11 on MERS-CoV infection.

Of the studies that also measured RNA viral load, these demonstrated a link between the success of isolating the live virus with viral load levels.

The researchers assessed how much SARS-CoV-2 was detected between the mouth and the lungs at various time intervals.

The paper concluded this immunity was likely to be there "because of previous infection with coronaviruses other than SARS-CoV-2", for example the common cold virus.

In this study, the team of researchers at the La Jolla Institute of Immunology in California, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NY, investigated multiple compartments of circulating immune memory to SARS-CoV-2 in 185 Covid-19 cases, including 41 cases more than six months post-infection.

In contrast, the viral loads of SARS and MERS-CoV peaked at 10-14 days and 7-10 days after symptom onset, respectively.

"It provides a clear explanation for why SARS-CoV-2 spreads more efficiently than SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV and is so much more hard to contain", Cevik added.

Researchers say delirium can be particularly detrimental to elderly people, increasing their likelihood of severe disease and death.

Of those without any antibodies at the start of study, 89 developed symptomatic infections that were confirmed with a swab test. "With a big heart, he also dedicated himself to serving the community as well as the education sector."Maxim's Centre is an environmentally-friendly building in Cheung Shun Street, completed in 2015 to house all the group's main operations.Wu passed away at 101, according to reports in the Chinese media, which add three years to the age of the deceased based on Chinese tradition. He was born in the United States but returned to his ancestral home, the southern Chinese city of Taishan in Guangdong, with his mother at the age of two".

The study revealed that people have the highest viral load in the early phase of the infection.

The researchers concluded that it is unlikely that people remain infectious beyond this point.

'We also need to raise public awareness about the range of symptoms linked with the disease, including mild symptoms that may occur earlier on in the course of the infection than those that are more prominent like cough or fever'.

More than five months after their COVID-19 diagnosis "96% of individuals were still positive for at least three out of five SARS-CoV-2 immune memory responses", the study said.

Many countries recommend that people with the virus should self-isolate for 10 days, which the authors said is in line with their findings, cautiously covering the period of infectiousness.

The number of new coronavirus infections in France rose by 22,882 to 2.11 million on Friday, slightly higher than the 21,140 reported on Thursday, while hospital numbers eased again.

The limitation of the study is that it did not look at asymptomatic people.
