Louisiana Joins Multi-State Antitrust Suit Against Google

"Competition in this industry is vitally important, which is why today's challenge against Google - the gatekeeper of the internet - for violating antitrust laws is a monumental case both for the Department of Justice and for the American people", said Attorney General William Barr in the October 20 announcement. The department has filed an antitrust lawsuit against the company and it's largely based on the deals Google has signed with other tech companies to be the default Search engine and browser on devices.

In the home market of Android phone makers Samsung and LG, Google Play Store revenue in South Korea stood at almost KRW 6 trillion (roughly Rs. 389 crores) in 2019.

The US government lodged an antitrust lawsuit against Google on Tuesday, and the company is facing growing criticism from some lawmakers in South Korea who accuse it of abusing its dominant market position. He further said that there is nothing wrong in the agreements Google has with Apple.

Google is responsible for around 90% of searches worldwide, which is why the DOJ chose to focus its case on the company's dominance in search. The language-"Google's monopoly in general search services also has given the company extraordinary power as the gateway to the internet, which it uses to promote its own web content"-echoed concerns from Yelp Inc., Tripadvisor and others". The much-anticipated lawsuit specifically targets Google's general search services, search advertising, and general search text advertising practices.

Google has protested its innocence, claiming people use Google because they love it, not because they are forced to. The case is likely to take years to resolve. Members of the state coalition including Colorado and NY released a joint statement Tuesday saying they planned to conclude parts of their investigation in the coming weeks and that if a state lawsuit is filed, they would seek to join it with the federal action. "American antitrust law is created to promote innovation and help consumers, not tilt the playing field in favour of particular competitors or make it harder for people to get the services they want".
