BC adds 223 new COVID-19 cases

There have been 1,681 deaths to date from the coronavirus pandemic while almost 183,000 people have tested positive, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported.

BC now has 1,920 active cases, with 71 people in hospital with the virus, 24 of whom are in critical or intensive care. "Total cases" reflects all cases reported by the department. A new record was set Thursday when 274 infections were reported along with a stern message from Henry that more restrictions will be put in to curb transmission of the virus, if necessary.

20 of those cases are tied to the outbreak at Garden Courte Memory Care, an assisted living facility in Olympia.

The community outbreaks were declared at Coast Spas Manufacturing in Langley and at Pace Processing in Surrey.

"In recent days, we have seen a number of new outbreaks of COVID-19 in the community and in long-term care facilities", Henry says.

There have been two new health-care facility outbreaks at Laurel Place and Fair Haven Homes Burnaby Lodge. Over 2,200,868 patients have tested negative to date.

The other two were discovered at long-term care facilities in Metro Vancouver. There also continue to be exposure events around the province.

The additional cases bring the total number of COVID-19 cases in the county to 2,540 with a total of 2,038 of those listed as being in recovery, according to a health department statement.

The health department is asking people who test positive to notify their close contacts that they may have been exposed.

She said they could include conditions on wedding licences and reducing the province's current 50-person limit on gatherings.

Most of B.C.'s cases of COVID-19 have been located in the Lower Mainland, but the disease has spread to every region of the province.

Bonnie Henry reports that there are 4,319 cases in Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), 6,864 in Fraser Health, 250 on Vancouver Island, 662 in Interior Health and 371 in Northern Health. There have also been 88 cases recorded in B.C. among people who reside outside Canada.
