It will prevent 120 people being hospitalised with the virus, 15 seriously ill patients ending up in intensive care and 20 deaths.

"The 14-day incidence was at three per 100,000 at the end of June, today it is 302 per 100,000 population", Dr Burns added.

Further analysis, which includes deaths of care home residents in hospital, shows that of the 441 deaths of care home residents involving Covid-19 in the year to date to 16 October 2020, 81.0% (357) occurred in a care home, with the remaining 84 occurring in the hospital.

He was speaking as it emerged the risk of being exposed to Covid is 100 times greater than four months ago.

The 14 day incidence for Ireland is now at 306 cases per 100k population.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health said; "We are now in Level 5 because the disease is at very serious levels in our country and posing a significant risk to public health". The risk of you being exposed to COVID-19 is now 100 times greater than it was 4 months ago.

Professor Philip Nolan, chair of the Nphet modelling group, said the R number - which needs to be lower than 1 - is at 1.3 to 1.4 nationally.

In the past seven days, the Department of Health has recorded 6,893 new cases of Coronavirus. 24 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

"The single most effective measure to protect vulnerable groups, including nursing homes, is to reduce community transmission significantly".

The App assists in stopping the spread of Covid-19 in Northern Ireland, by contacting people who have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Nisra data gives a fuller picture of Covid-19 fatalities than the figures released on a daily basis by the department.

Dr Holohan also reminded the public that self isolation requires people to stay at home in one room as much as possible and to avoid other people - including those in your household.
