Patriots put 1 on COVID-19 list, Broncos game to proceed

The New England Patriots have placed starting right guard Shaq Mason, reserve defensive end Derek Rivers and running back Sony Michel on the reserve/COVID-19 list, a source tells ESPN's Field Yates.

In addition, 12 players from the Jaguars practice squad were placed onto the Covid reserve list after one tested positive, prompting the closing of the team training facility. Newton missed New England's loss at Kansas City on October 5 after his October 2 positive test.

The Jaguars (1-4) remain set to host Detroit (1-3) on Sunday.

"I don't really know the answer to that", Broncos coach Vic Fangio said when asked about finally playing the Patriots. "We're under the assumption and understanding that this game's going to go off on time. And anything that happens otherwise will happen when it happens".

"The health and safety of our players, coaches and staff, as well as their families, is our top priority", the Jaguars said in a written statement Saturday morning.

The Patriots have already lost their bye week, moving it from Week 6 to Week 5 to accommodate the Broncos game. Later that day, the club placed center James Ferentz on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Cominsky, Baltimore defensive tackle Brandon Williams and Jacksonville defensive end Josh Mauro were put onto the list, which means either a positive test or close contact with someone who has tested positive. Gilmore, who tested positive on October 7, was activated from the list Thursday.

"It's good to have him back", McDaniels said.

The Broncos (1-3) haven't played since October 1.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports "If the game could not be played Sunday, the National Football League would be presented with its toughest scheduling challenge to date".

The Patriots haven't played since October 5, when they lost at Kansas City, so their layoff is a dozen days if the game is played Sunday.

Denver's layoff is the longest in the league since 2001, when the NFL postponed all games on the weekend following the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Of those three teams, only the Steelers won in their return to action.

But Denver running backs coach Curtis Modkins will not travel to the game with the Patriots after testing positive for Covid-19, the Broncos announced. "The four positive samples were retested and have been confirmed negative".

The Colts had four positive tests that came up negative upon retesting.

Beckham was kept away from Cleveland's facility and didn't practice for two days after feeling ill on Thursday and being sent home.

Atlanta resumed in-person work under more stringent safety measures.
