Xander Schauffele three ahead of Tyrrell Hatton at CJ Cup in Vegas

Hatton, among six players who were in England last week for the European Tour's flagship event, was headed for a rocky finish when he laid up into the rough on the par-5 16th that led to a second straight bogey. "But Xander kind of went off today, so that makes it a little harder". "It's fair to say that I'm pretty exhausted right now", he said. "I kept the ball in front of me really well and felt really good over a lot of my putts, too".

Schauffele holed further birdies from 25 feet at the 14th and 35 feet at the 15th before getting up and down from the fringe to pick up another shot at the par-five 16th and then chipping in from off the 17th green.

"It was a nice stretch", Schauffele said about his birdie run.

Schauffele, from La Jolla and San Diego State, started at No. 10 and made a birdie on No. 11, then added six in a row to close out the back nine. "Still struggling a little bit with jetlag". Pace of play slowed down a lot, kind of hot and it's easy to let the mind wander. "I am upset I didn't make more birdies, but pleased I didn't make any bogeys".

Schauffele posted six straight birdies on his way to a blemish-free 64 in good scoring conditions at Shadow Creek, taking him to 14 under and pulling him clear of nearest challenger Tyrrell Hatton.

"It was an inconsistent day", said Hatton, who won the BMW PGA Championship last week at Wentworth outside London and captured his first PGA Tour victory earlier this year in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. "Obviously I was disappointed with bogeys", he said. "Everything is right there in front of you and you just have to man up and hit the shots, and hang in there".

The CJ Cup was switched to Las Vegas from South Korea this year because of travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
