Lafayette's Dustin Poirier Thinks Conor McGregor Is Next Opponent

"We didn't have a date this year".

Helwani reported Thursday that UFC offered McGregor a fight against Poirier on the January 23 pay-per-view event - UFC 257 - but McGregor wants the November 21 or December 12 pay-per-view card.

Poirier went on to add that he was offered the same amount to fight Chandler as he was offered to fight Ferguson.

The fight is not yet official, according to ESPN's Ariel Helwani, and Poirier told Helwani on Wednesday that nobody from the UFC has reached out to him about it yet.

A rematch win over Poirier, who Khabib beat in a title defence past year, would certainly put the former two-weight champion back in the mix.

UFC have already planned their cards this year with a number of title matches scheduled and when asked if they could be shifted, White explained: "That's not how it works".

"It's a yes or no answer".

"I have no clue", White said.

Earlier this week, White said the UFC calendar was fully-booked for this year and that McGregor and Poirier would have to wait until January for a rematch of their 2014 meeting, which the notorious Dubliner won via first-round knockout.

UFC 255 features a male flyweight title bout between Deiveson Figueiredo and Alex Perez and a female flyweight title fight between Valentina Shevchenko and Jennifer Maia.

"That's not how it works", White said regarding moving fights around for McGregor/Poirier in 2020. He was retired. Would anybody disagree he was retired? "Not just financially, but my outlook on life, the respect I have, and a lot of things". We made it happen. He wants to fight Dustin Poirier apparently, so we went to (broadcast partner) ESPN and got him his own date. We have our schedule laid out. "I saw Conor bringing in his coaches and starting to train, and also Tony's out there, he wants to fight", Poirier said.

McGregor has expressed interest in facing Manny Pacquiao in the boxing ring and even stated on social media that part of the reason he wants to face Poirier is because Poirier is a southpaw - like Pacquiao - and known as one of the better boxers in MMA. McGregor was also in "serious talks" to take on boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, too.
