France reports over 30000 new covid-19 cases in a single day

The curfew, which aims to keep some 20 million people home from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am, was unveiled by President Emmanuel Macron this week as the number of new infections and deaths raised the spectre of hospital overloads like those seen in March and April.

Live from Paris, as French healthcare workers have gathered for a protest organised by labour unions to demand better working conditions.

The 9pm curfew is aimed at limiting the resurgent coronavirus amid second wave.

"We have now entered a phase to which we must react..."

France's president Macron stated that this State of Emergency was now set to be re-introduced, along with the other tougher measures, from Saturday. "What is called the curfew is a measure that is appropriate".

He warned that those caught ignoring the curfew would face a €135 ($158) fine, which could balloon to as much as €7,500 ($8,771) - and lead to a six-month prison sentence - for third-time violations. "We are going to have to deal with this virus until at least the summer of 2021".

France has reported over 30,000 new coronavirus cases in one day - a rise of over 8,000. According to this new State of Emergency, these new rules are also applied to Lille, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse, Lyon, Grenoble, Aix-en-Provence, and Montpellier.

Macron said new daily coronavirus cases must be brought down to "3,000 or 5,000", from current levels, which have reached up to nearly 27,000.
