Karthik hands over IPL captaincy to England's Morgan

Dinesh Karthik has chose to handover the Kolkata Knight Riders captaincy to England's limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan, the franchise announced on their official website on Friday. The KKR management thanked Karthik for his contributions as captain "over the past two and a half years" and wished Eoin Morgan the best going forward. Karthik said the decision would help him focus on his batting more.

Venky Mysore, chief executive officer and managing director of the Knight Riders, said on their website: "We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes", he said.

KKR now stand at fourth spot in the IPL table winning four games and losing three in first half of the season. He has left the captaincy of the KKR team. "We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice captain, is willing to lead the side going forward", he added.

There have been calls for Morgan to name the captain from the start of the season itself and it grew more when a few of Karthik's decision went wrong.

Insult to injury was mystery spinner Sunil Narine being reported again for a suspect action. So finally, Karthik chose to hand over the responsibility to Eoin Morgan who had helped England win their maiden World Cup in 2019.

What lies ahead for Morgan?

The 34-year-old has been widely credited with transforming England's white-ball fortunes since 2015, culminating in their World Cup win last year.

While batsman Karthik with all his experience will still be an automatic choice as a playing member, Morgan, with calmness and better match-reading qualities, may bring in the consistency that the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise so desperately needs.

Dinesh Karthik was appointed the skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018.
