Haryana Woman Locked in Toilet by Husband for Over a Year, Rescued

Her husband of 17 years, Naresh Kumar, has been arrested by local police on suspicion of locking her away. "I received information that a woman was locked in the toilet for over a year". The woman was taken to the civil hospital after she was rescued.

t;A woman who was allegedly locked inside a toilet for over a year by her husband was rescued by Women Protection & Child Marriage Prohibition Officer in Panipat.

"Complaint has been filed, action will be taken", said police officials. The incident came to light on Tuesday and the woman was rescued from the washroom by DWPO Rajni Gupta and a police team.

The woman was found in a filthy state and had not eaten for days, according to officials. Upon questioning, her husband Naresh Kumar, who was arrested for the offence, claimed she was having mental health issues for almost past three years, said Panipat's Sanoli police station in-charge Surender Dahiya. When we reached here, we found that it was true.

Speaking to ANI, Gupta said that she acted upon information and rescued the woman on Wednesday. We cannot confirm whether she is mentally unstable or not, but she was locked in the toilet.

Dahiya said a case was registered against Kumar under sections 498A and 342 of the Indian Penal Code on charges of a man subjecting his wife to cruelty and wrongfully confining her.

Kumar claimed that his wife had mental health issues but the welfare department officer said that the victim was able to identify all family members and replied to all the questions asked by the team. We cannot confirm whether she is mentally unstable or not, but she was locked in the toilet. Preliminary investigations revealed the woman was not being provided even proper food and she had turned frail and weak during her confinement, he said. Asked why the children did not speak up for their mother, he said, We are looking into this aspect.

According to the police, a complaint has been filed in this regard and action will be taken soon.

The police, meanwhile, said they will approach doctors to ascertain the mental status of the woman.
