Queen steps out with Prince William for first engagement since March

The queen and William did not wear face masks but arrived separately and stayed two metres apart, while aides said all 48 people due to come into close contact with the royals had been tested for coronavirus.

Queen Elizabeth carried out her first major engagement since a coronavirus lockdown in March, visiting the Porton Down military research facility on Thursday which was involved in dealing with a 2018 Novichok nerve agent attack.

Her Majesty was joined by the Duke of Cambridge to open the Energetics Analysis Centre near Salisbury.

A spokesman for the palace said all advice was followed. Before the United Kingdom was put into full lockdown on March 23, the queen and her husband, Prince Philip, had moved from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle, where they have been since.

Face coverings are required by law in certain indoor settings such as on public transport, in shops and places of worship.

It is a rare joint engagement for the Queen and Duke, who only generally appear together at family or major ceremonial occasions.

Although Kensington Palace declined to comment, it is understood the duke was also tested in order to accompany his grandmother, and was negative.

"Dstl staff have also been involved in the UK's response to Covid-19 so are well versed in the necessary precautions".

But the Salisbury engagement comes amid a resurgence of the virus, as the country battles a second wave and stricter restrictions for some areas.

Russian intelligence has been accused of being behind the attempted nerve agent assassination of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury.

The 94-year-old and William likely enjoyed the demonstration of a Forensic Explosives Investigation with explosives detection dog named Max given they are both dog lovers!

During the pandemic, the only outdoor engagement the Queen took on was a scaled down Trooping the Colour, held on the grounds of Windsor Castle, where she and Prince Philip, 99, were isolating.

Furthermore, The Queen and William chatted with scientists providing support to the United Kingdom amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
