Kelly Clarkson, who is hosting, kicked off the show singing Steve Winwood's "Higher Love", which became a dance hit previous year after Whitney Houston's cover of the song was remixed by Norwegian DJ-producer Kygo and became an worldwide hit. His 2019 album "Hollywood's Bleeding" - which featured the hits "Circles", "Wow" and "Goodbyes" - is up for top Billboard 200 album while "Sunflower", his collaboration with Swae Lee from the Oscar-winning animation "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", is nominated for top rap song, top collaboration and top streaming song.

BTS won the Top Social Artist award for the fourth consecutive year at this year's Billboard Music Awards. While accepting an award at the American Music Awards previous year, Post said, "I love grapes". BTS was awarded the title a year ago to become the first K-pop artist to win multiple prizes at the BBMA. John Legend will perform "Never Break" from his new album.
