Night Curfew in Paris and Eight Other Cities

The curfew which will begin from Friday midnight will be implemented from 9 PM to 6 AM and will last for at least four weeks to stem the spread of coronavirus.

He emphasized collective responsibility and the need for citizens to respect health restrictions in both the private and public sphere - limiting gatherings to only six people.

President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron has announced a daily curfew for the Île-de-France region, which includes the city of Paris and Disneyland Paris.

"It's not the state that's attacking us, it's the virus", he said of the measures, calling for a spirit of solidarity of the French public.

"This crisis will end one day", he said, "and at that point we will be able to truly learn from what happened", insisting that in the meantime prevention was paramount.

Anyone who is out during the curfew will need to have a good reason, the president said.

Anyone caught breaching the curfew in the nine areas risked a fine of €135, Macron said, and for repeat offenders this could rise to €1,500.

Paris had been largely spared those measures, but alarms were raised Saturday after the country recorded almost 27,000 new cases in the previous 24-hour period, a record for France during the pandemic, with a worrying number of infections concentrated in the capital.

The situation is worrying and the curfew is a "pertinent" measure while having the whole country locked down again would be "disproportionate", he explained.

The number of patients in intensive care has increased by 25. This was the third time in six days that the daily tally had exceeded 20,000.

"We will come out of this stronger, because we will be more united".

Shortly before the curfew was announced, the French government moved to reinstate a public health state of emergency in a bid to curb an uptick in coronavirus infections across the country.

Macron said the government would make full short-term working payments available to all employees in sectors such as the restaurant industry that are affected by the new measures.
