Daryl Morey Steps Down As General Manager Of Rockets

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is stepping down, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Morey was successful during his run with the team - the Rockets have made the playoffs 8 years in the row, the longest streak among National Basketball Association teams. ESPN reported Thursday that Morey had stepped down.

But he's most well-known for the China incident - on October 4, 2019 he tweeted out support for Hong Kong, which REALLY pissed off China. They lost to the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals.

Houston owner Tillman Fertitta had publicly supported Morey despite the wave of backlash it brought the National Basketball Association, including the increased scrutiny over the league's ties with China and players failing to speak out against China despite dipping their toes into social justice waters. Morey was promoted to general manager just over a year later.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver and Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta both backed Morey, the 2018 NBA Executive of the Year, despite Chinese calls for his dismissal and what Silver estimated were financial losses to the NBA of about $400 million. These are all some significant accomplishments, although he was never quite able to construct a team that could end up in the NBA Finals.

For now, Morey will continue to help the team during their head coaching search although once that is over with, Rafael Stone will become the team's general manager.
