Kim Kardashian West to freeze Facebook, Instagram accounts

The hip-hop wife to rap star Kanye West has announced she's temporarily ending her Facebook and Instagram presence in an effort to stop the spread of misinformation and hate.

As much as we love Facebook and Instagram for connecting us with our favourite actors and influencers, we can not ignore the fact that the social media has been giving a platform to hate speech and misinformation also.

The move is part of the #StopHateforProfit campaign which was organised by civil rights activists.

She plans to freeze her accounts on Wednesday.

"Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy", she added.

"I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can't sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation", Kardashian said, blaming the creation of such content on groups dedicated to dividing Americans.

On Tuesday, Kerry Washington, Mark Ruffalo, Leonardo Dicaprio, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lawrence signed on to the Instagram freeze.

"I can't sit idly by while these platforms turn a blind eye to groups and posts spreading hateful disinformation", Perry wrote on Instagram. The protests are meant to highlight the concerns about disinformation and hate speech on Facebook and Instagram.

The campaign encouraged users to post about the harms that Facebook is inflicting on society and the importance of voting. The recent Black Lives Matter protests and President Trump's ways of curbing it have only raised questions on social media companies' responsibility in tackling fake news which can endanger marginalised people's lives.

The campaign, launched earlier this year, won the support of dozens of major companies in an advertising boycott of the social media giant.

As a result of the boycott, shares in Facebook fell dramatically and USA media reported that $7.2bn had been knocked off Mr Zuckerberg's personal net worth.
