Barcelona can't afford Depay - Lyon

Olympique Lyonnais striker Memphis Depay is one of the favourites of Koeman.

Barcelona can not afford to buy Memphis Depay because of the hit their finances have taken during the COVID-19 crisis, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has claimed.

Ronald Koeman has been keen on bringing in the 26-year-old, who he knows very well from his time in charge of the Dutch national team.

According to Telegraaf, Memphis Depay is set to join Barcelona for around 25 million euros.

Reports in Spanish media claim that Barcelona may consider a player plus cash deal to secure Depay's services.

Responding on Twitter, Aulas said: "The president of Barcelona told me on Sunday that Barca are really suffering from the COVID crisis and were not able to make an offer".

This is at odds with what Barcelona technical secretary Ramon Planes said when asked about a move for Depay earlier on Tuesday. 'And among them, we are looking for a forward.

The Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup but within 1 year Koeman had built a group of quality players who went all the way to the final of the 2019 UEFA Nations League. We always aspire to improve the squad'.

Speaking to Téléfoot Chaine following Lyon's 2-1 loss against Montpellier, Sporting Director Juninho provided an update on the future of Dutchman Memphis Depay, amid continued speculation linking him to Barcelona.
