Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman star in trailer for The Father

Judging from the newly released trailer, it looks like a complete tour-de-force for Hopkins, who I feel has been living up to this performance for several years thanks to his frequently freakish Twitter videos.

Directed by Florian Zeller, the film is already hotly tipped to do well during awards season, and we can see why. Because this certainly seems to be one.

The movie is directed by Florian Zeller (Floride, The Other Woman) who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Oscar victor Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liaisons).

Rounding out a sterling cast is Rufus Sewell as Paul, with whom Anne plans to move to Paris, Imogen Poots, Olivia Williams and League of Gentleman star Mark Gatiss. You might want to reinforce those heartstrings, because The Father is going to tug on them with all its might.

The official synopsis meanwhile reads as follows...

Sony Pictures Classics has released the official trailer for The Father, an upcoming drama starring Oscar victor Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes, The Silence of the Lambs, Westworld) Oscar victor Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown, Fleabag), and Imogen Poots (Vivarium, Green Room, 28 Weeks Later).

As he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, and the trailer shows a scene in which Rebecca Hall takes the place of Colman, and says she is his daughter.

The only release date we have at the moment is "2021", which tells you more about the fluid state of the cinema calendar than anything else right now.
