Pac-12 approves 10-game conference-only slate for football

Teams may also begin training camp as early as August 17, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said in a media webinar Friday, but it's unclear how county and state health regulations would impact the start date.

USC and UCLA will meet each other in the season opener on September 26 at the Rose Bowl, the Pac-12 said Friday in announcing a conference-only schedule that has been drastically altered by the novel coronavirus. The Cougars, who are not members of any conference, will be forced to drop scheduled games against Utah, Michigan State, Arizona State, Minnesota, Missouri and Stanford.

As for the start date, the conference announced that the 2020 Pac-12 football season will begin on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The new Pac-12 football schedule still has the Apple Cup on the Friday after Thanksgiving. That will be four weeks after some schools start in Week Zero (Aug. 29) and three weeks after Week 1 (Sept. 3-5). Each team will have a bye in Week 4, 5 or 6, with another in Week 12 leading up to the Pac-12 championship game on December 18 or 19 at a campus site.

The Pac-12's CEO Group approved conference-only scheduling plans for other fall sports, including men's & women's soccer, women's volleyball and men's & women's cross country. "We are appreciative of Commissioner Scott, the Pac-12 staff and everyone involved across our 12 institutions for working collaboratively to create these schedules". Besides USC-UCLA, the other traditional rivalry game being moved is Arizona-Arizona State, which also will be held on the first weekend.
