It'll slot into the range as a smaller and cheaper alternative to the Vito van-based V-Class, which is also offered with both diesel and electric power - the latter known as the EQV.

As seen here in a teaser, the T-Class compact van will arrive in the first half of 2022, but we could expect to see it in the concept guise before that.

Just as you think they have made every possible vehicle, from hatchbacks to coupe SUVs, to coupe 4 doors to huge SUVs with coupe-like bodies, they announce another vehicle class to slot in between some of their other models.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed further details of its upcoming S-Class, with the all-new version of the limo flagship boasting even more cutting edge technology - including being able to protect itself from being T-boned. "These customers seek attractive and practical compact vehicles - and it is precisely these demands which the new T-Class fulfils", says Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans. "With our unique design philosophy of Sensual Purity we create an attractive family companion being the T-Class inspiring with its design, proportions and its perceived value".

The first-generation Citan was often criticised for being just a rebadged Renault model and Mercedes wants to make sure its successor is "clearly discernible at first glance as a member of the Mercedes-Benz family". The company said that the vehicle will be undoubtedly a Mercedes-Benz, too, bearing the brand's DNA and signature characteristics. New class, new concept The private-customer market is the focus of the completely newly developed Mercedes-Benz T-Class.

Mercedes will put forth the T-Class as a family-oriented city commuter with abilities to allow for needs of an active lifestyle as well.

In terms of a local introduction, Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia and New Zealand corporate communications manager Blake Vincent said the brand was now "assessing the suitability" of the Citan and T-Class "but no decision to launch in Australia has been made" as yet. The T-Class and the Citan will be established in cooperation with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.
