Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu leaves game vs. Dream with reported ankle injury

Ionescu had to be helped off the court and wasn't putting weight on the ankle.

The former OR superstar twisted her ankle after stepping on the right foot of a backpedaling Dream defender and went down at midcourt with 5:10 to go in the second quarter at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

The Liberty selected Ionescu, 22, as the No. 1 overall pick in this year's WNBA draft in April, and it didn't take long for her to show her prowess in the league.

A film session with a two-time MVP and three-time National Basketball Association champion would pay dividends for anyone, and Ionescu was no exception as she rebounded from that to explode for 33 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in her next game against the Dallas Wings.

According to NBA TV, Ionescu sprained her ankle and underwent X-rays but did not return in the 84-78 loss.

Friday was the third game of her WNBA rookie season; she was coming off a 33-point, 7-rebound, 7-assist performance in Wednesday's loss vs. Dallas.

On Friday, Ionescu had 10 points in 12 minutes against the Dream before suffering the injury. NY fell to 0-3 on the season, losing 84-78 to Atlanta.

"Get healthy as soon as possible!"

"It meant a lot to me to hear from so numerous National Basketball Association guys, including LeBron James, Damian Lillard, Ja Morant and Steve Nash".

Ionescu, who won AP All-American honours three times at OR, shattered the NCAA career triple-double mark (for both men and women) with 26 and became the first player in college history to have 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists.
