Fauci Frets That US Could See 100K New COVID Cases Daily

At the time of this writing, the United States is recording upward of 40,000 new confirmed cases daily, according to reports, and new outbreaks in states such as Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas account for at least 50% of all new confirmed infections across the country.

The hearing took place as Republican governors of newly hard hit states, including Texas and Florida, have been rescinding reopening plans in the face of surging cases of he virus that has killed at least 124,000 people in the US since February. Rand Paul (R-KY) warned listeners not to put too much stock in the opinion of government health experts who "we, like sheep, blindly follow".

He warned that if we do not get the situation under control, the USA could see more than 100,000 new cases every day.

"If that's true and we'll take them on their word, then you and I and others could have a vaccine that we might be able to take in December or January or February", Fauci said.

"Now we're seeing the consequences of community spread, which is even more hard to contain than spread in a well-known physical location like a prison or nursing home or meatpacking place", Fauci told the cable channel in the interview, which was recorded on Friday. But he suggested the vaccine would not be fully effective.

"I think there was a lot of wishful thinking around the country that, "hey it's summer".

Dr. Fauci said "there is no guarantee" that ongoing efforts will produce a safe and effective vaccine to prevent infection by the virus, pouring cold water on hopes for a quick fix to the health crisis.

"There is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country - an alarmingly large percentage of people, relatively speaking", Fauci told CNN in an interview.

Earlier this month, Fauci told the Journal of the American Medical Association there are four or five trials underway for vaccine candidates, and he expects the USA will have millions of doses of a vaccine by year's end.

"I am also quite concerned about what we are seeing evolve right now in several states, Fauci said".

"If you go into the community and call up and say: 'How's the contact tracing going?' The dots are not connected because a lot of it is done by phone".

"We're looking at the Fourth of July coming up in a couple of days, and frankly it scares me", he said.

Fauci, the country's top infectious diseases expert, told senators that the United States could see the number of COVID-19 infections skyrocket.

Why it matters: Suppression of the virus has failed, and the U.S.is missing presidential leadership on social distancing and face masks.
