"We're elated to carry the 2020 "VMAs" again to NYC, the cultural mecca of the planet exactly where songs and enjoyment are woven into the DNA", Bruce Gillmer, president of audio, music talent, programming and activities for ViacomCBS Media Networks, stated in a statement.

News of MTV's Big Apple-hosted ceremony comes as Emmy brass are mulling various format options for the September 20 ceremony.

"The VMAs will be the initially Barclays Heart party since the COVID-19 pandemic achieved NY", claimed Oliver Weisberg, chief government officer of Barclays Middle and the Brooklyn Nets, in a statement.

For the 2020 show, the VMAs are going wide, featuring performances from various iconic locations throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island, to honour the spirit and resilience of NY.

"The health and safety of artists, fans, industry, staff, and partners is of the utmost importance", MTV said in a news release.

The last time the VMAs was held at Barclays Center was in 2013.

Producers of the VMAs are working closely with state and local officials to implement safety practices including social-distancing procedures and limited capacity or no audience. "The health of everyone involved remains our No. 1 priority". The VMAs airs across MTV's global footprint of linear and digital platforms in more than 180 countries and territories, reaching 450 million households in almost 30 different languages.

Award shows traditionally feature large numbers of performers, guests, audiences and stage crews, and have been relegated to online or prerecorded events since the pandemic shut down theatre, music and other live shows in mid-March.

The Broadway League said plans to safely re-open New York's most bankable tourist attraction were being developed, including screening and testing showgoers, along with cleaning and sanitizing protocols.
