LA shuts bars again as United States struggles with COVID-19 infections

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday, June 28, 2020, ordered bars that have opened in seven California counties to immediately close and urged bars in eight other counties to do the same.

Health officials have said the decision was based on data related to the surge in COVID-19 cases as well as hospitalization and transmission rates. "Locally, we have not seen that in bars", Director of Public Health Matt Constantine said.

New coronavirus cases have been surging in more than half of U.S. states, reaching record highs.

"These trend lines over the last seven days, over the last 14 days, are disturbing and that's why I can not impress upon people more to wear these masks when they can not practice physical distancing to continue to be vigilant about the spread of this virus", he stated. More tests are also coming back positive, up to 25% in some areas.

On Friday, Texas and Florida ordered all bars to close.

Even in states where cases have been declining for weeks, bars have been a source of outbreaks. In addition, over the weekend, Newsom recommended that local health officers consider closing bars (though not a state mandate) in Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Stanislaus counties.

As temperatures rose to above 38 degrees celsius, dozens of people, mostly without masks climbed into inflatable inner tubes with coolers and took to the water to escape the heat. Very few wore masks.

As of Sunday, California Department of Public Health records count 216,550 total cases.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis conceded there had been an "explosion" in new cases as the state notched a record 9,585 cases in 24 hours.

"There has been some attention nationwide about some types of businesses being responsible for outbreaks". Pence did wear a face covering while sitting in the audience, according to a video. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 87% of the singers developed COVID-19.

"Our administration is promoting the practice" of mask wearing", Pence added.

Global coronavirus cases exceeded 10 million on Sunday according to a Reuters tally, marking a significant milestone in the spread of the respiratory disease that has so far killed nearly half a million people in seven months.
