Harris English fifth golfer on PGA Tour to test positive

When it comes to crowd favourites in golf, Phil Mickelson has always been up there as one of the most loved golfers to ever play on the PGA Tour, but that didn't stop golf fans around the world grilling him for his choice of pants for Sunday's final round at the Travelers Championship. He became the second player in as many days to test positive after the PGA toughened coronavirus safety measures.

Harris English tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of this week's Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, the PGA Tour announced Monday. Two players and two caddies tested positive two weeks ago to increase concerns and prompt tighter restrictions, players having to test negative to be allowed at courses.

English did not play in last week's Travelers Championship - won in such style by Dustin Johnson to return to the world's top three - and was shocked when he was pulled out soon after arrival at the Detroit Golf Club.

The two-time PGA Tour victor received the diagnosis after undergoing a screening ahead of this week's Rocket Mortgage Classic.

That makes it 10 players who have been obliged to scratch the last two events - and that was before the on-site testing began for this week's event.

The PGA Tour said in a statement that it had carried out contact tracing after Frittelli returned the positive result, but was not recommending additional testing at this time. "I appreciate the tour support and I look forward to competing again after I'm fully recovered". He missed the cut in the Charles Schwab Challenge before finishing in a tie for 17th in the RBC Heritage.

This week's event and next week's first of two straight tournaments at Dublin, Ohio, are set to be the last without spectators.
