Super Pink Moon illuminates Cape Town sky

The biggest and brightest supermoon of the year will happen tonight, says NASA.

The Pink Supermoon rises over Penshaw Monument in an astronomical event that occurs when the moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit, making it appear much larger and brighter than usual, in Sunderland, Britain, April 7, 2020.

The April full moon may also be called the sprouting grass moon, the egg moon and the fish moon. A full moon becomes a Super Full Moon when it is at its closest point to Earth. We're in the midst of a global health crisis, people are isolating in their homes and fearing for their loved ones, and there's really no telling when "normal" will return. It will occur when the moon is within 90% of perigee, which is its closest approach to Earth in orbit.

The pink supermoon seen from Bintan Island in Indonesia on Tuesday. "When we see the moon next to a tree or a mountain or a plane flying in front of it, we certainly get a perception of it being very big". Beguilingly, yesterday, April 7, the moon came closest to the Earth for the entire year when it reached the perigee.

The "pink moon" is the name given to the full moon of early spring, named for the flower Phlox subulata, a common springtime flower.

It won't be the only unusual sight in the sky, depending on where you live.

Unfortunately, not everyone will be lucky enough to actually witness tonight's Super Pink Moon.

"I know right now folks are perhaps under some restrictions for when they can get outside, but if it's a clear night, and you have a great view to the south, you should be able to catch a glimpse even outside of your own residence of the moon hanging beautifully in the sky", he said.
