Reddit Bans Major Pro-Trump Subreddit Amid Mass Purge for Hate Speech

Reddit is banning r/The_Donald along with nearly 2,000 other online communities after updating its content policy to crack down harder on hate speech, the company announced on Monday.

Reddit also banned multiple other accounts for violating their policies, though some have accused the company of using a mass ban to cover up a bias against the Trump community.

On Monday, Amazon's live-streaming platform Twitch said it had temporarily banned Trump's channel over its hateful conduct policy.

Twitch flagged and removed multiple pieces of content from the president as hateful - some of which is incredibly old, including a rebroadcast of Trump's kickoff rally, in which he infamously claimed that many illegal immigrants are the "worst" Mexico has to offer, like rapists.

Reddit will continue to ban any of these forums, called subreddits, that don't abide by new content policy, the company announced Monday in a statement.

The longtime pro-Trump subreddit used by "has consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average, antagonized us and other communities, and its (moderators) have refused to meet our most basic expectations", Reddit added.

In response it updated its site rules, adding a clause which "explicitly states that communities and users that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned".

"To be clear, views across the political spectrum are allowed on Reddit - but all communities must work within our policies and do so in good faith, without exception".

Social-media companies have long struggled to deal with hate speech on their platforms.
