Merkel warns United Kingdom of weaker ties to European Union after Brexit

Britain and the European Union have intensified talks on a trade deal that would replace ties severed by Brexit but with only a few months until a deal must be reached, the sides remain far apart.

From now on, European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier and his British counterpart David Frost will lead smaller teams with the political authority to break logjams.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said on Sunday the United States and Britain could agree a trade deal that did not cover all sectors straight away, instead leaving the more hard issues for a later date.

The chancellor said that if UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government wants to define it's own relationship with the the EUÂ it will have to "live with the consequences", which could be "a less closely interconnected economy".

It came despite major differences between the two sides about their future relations.

"Without clear signs of where compromise might occur, with no extension of the transition period we see a "skinny" deal as the best outcome", analysts at Barclays wrote in a note to clients on Friday.

David Frost, who is Johnson's top official for European affairs and is also taking up the role of national security adviser, led the United Kingdom delegation on Monday into the headquarters of the EU's executive arm, the European Commission, at the start of a week of negotiations.

"But that presupposes that the two sides want this", she added.

Though the negotiations have made little headway, Britain appears to have softened its combative stance toward the 27-nation EU.

London wants to agree on at least the bare bones of a trade deal this summer - at least politically, if not legally - in order to offer businesses clarity well before the end of the year.

"David will remain chief negotiator for the European Union talks until agreement is reached or until the talks end", the official said.
