High-profile belly dancer is jailed in Egypt

An Egyptian belly-dancer has been jailed for three years after a court ruled she incited "debauchery" in a TikTok video.

El-Masry was arrested in April amid a probe into videos and photos shared on social media platforms, such as TikTok.

El-Masry - who boasts over 3 million followers on Instagram - has denied the allegations and said the content in question was stolen previous year and shared without her consent.

Prosecutors described the posts as sexually suggestive and Cairo's Misdemeanours Economic Court said she had violated family principles and values, as well as using accounts on social media with the aim of committing "immorality". He told the Thomson Reuters Foundation that Ms El-Masry and the other social media influencers were destroying family values and traditions, activities that were banned by the law and the constitution. According to the country's prosecutor-general's office, cited by Egypt Today, it had received a number of complaints from the public over the woman's posts.

El-Masry further claimed that members of the Muslim Brotherhood had reported her to authorities because she had mocked the group in 2012 when Mohamed Morsi, affiliated with the Brotherhood, was president of Egypt, the Egypt Today report said.

Egyptian actress Rania Youssef poses on the red carpet at the closing ceremony of the 40th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) at the Cairo Opera House in the Egyptian capital on November 29, 2018.

Under a 2018 cyber crime law Egyptian authorities can censor the internet and carry out surveillance of communications. The 42-year-old dancer was also fined 300,000 EGP ($18,500). He also insisted that other TikTok and Instagram influencers, who have recently been accused of promoting "prostitution" and "debauchery" on social media and arrested in Egypt, would soon face similar sentences.

"Our conservative society is struggling with technological changes which have created a completely different environment and mindsets", she said.
