Shopify announces post-office model, most staff to permanently work from home

Canadian e-commerce firm Shopify Inc would keep its offices closed till 2021 and allow most employees to work remotely on a permanent basis after that, Chief Executive Officer Tobi Lutke said in a tweet on Thursday. "Until recently, work happened in the office".

Ottawa-based Shopify, which briefly became Canada's most valuable company earlier this month, had more than 5,000 employees and contractors worldwide as of December.

The Shopify boss explains that he hasn't figured everything out yet, and that there will be more change coming.

"Office centricity is over", Lutke said https://twitter.com/tobi/status/1263483496087064579 in the tweet.

The CEO wants to make the work experience the same for everyone in his company, no matter where they work from, and thinks it may actually help to have Shopify operate in this way because numerous merchants they serve are in the same situation. "This isn't a choice; this is the future", said Lutke.

His decision to have employees permanently work remotely comes after Shopify started beefing up its real estate with a new office in Toronto at the King and Portland Centre, steps away from the company's first office in Canada's largest city.

Shopify becomes the first major Canadian company to allow staff to work from home permanently, even as many large manufacturing companies, including Bombardier BBDb.TO , gradually bring back some of their workers following reopening plans announced by Canadian provinces.

Shopify operates from its 150 Elgin St. headquarters in Ottawa with another office around the corner at 234 Laurier Ave.

The company's stock now regularly reaches more than $1,000 in trading, and the company says more than one million businesses now use its offerings.
