Legendary Bulls Player and Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan Has Passed Away

He began his coaching career in Chicago, leading the Bulls for three years before leaving in 1982.

"Our Hall of Fame coach for 23 years, Jerry had a tremendous impact on the Jazz franchise as expressed by his banner hanging in the arena rafters".

'Like [John] Stockton and [Karl] Malone as players, Jerry Sloan epitomised the organisation.

Often described as hard-nosed, Sloan ranks second on the NBA's all-time list for consecutive games coached with one franchise (1,809), as well as the second-most wins with one team (1,127). 'Coach (Jerry) Sloan is not doing well, so I want you guys to pray for coach Sloan'.

The Jazz failed to make the playoffs in just three of Sloan's full seasons with the team and won at least 10 playoff games in 10 postseason appearances. He also had one season with the Baltimore Bullets in 1965-66. He will be greatly missed. He was a two-time All-Star with career averages of 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Years later, he was named an assistant with the Jazz in 1985 and remained in the role for four seasons before taking over head coaching duties. Sloan started as a scout, was promoted as an assistant under Frank Layden in 1984 and became the sixth coach in franchise history on December 9, 1988, after Layden resigned. He stepped down midway through the 2010-11 season.

Sloan finished his career with the third-most wins in National Basketball Association history at 1,221, as well as the sixth-best winning percentage (.603) all-time (with a minimum of 500 wins).

Lewy body dementia mirrors some of the symptoms of Parkinson's but also causes a progressive decline in mental abilities.

"I need to say this because I know that (John) Stockton and I have been talking a lot recently", Malone said. He coached the Jazz to the playoffs in 20 seasons and won 98 playoff games total (the sixth-most all-time).

"It was an honor and a privilege to have one of the greatest and most respected coaches in National Basketball Association history coaching our team", the family said in a statement. The Jazz claimed seven division titles under his leadership.

'We have appreciated our relationship with Jerry and acknowledge his dedication to and passion for the Utah Jazz. He has left an enduring legacy with this franchise and our family.
