Israel arrests Palestine's Jerusalem minister

Israel detained the Palestinian governor of Jerusalem on Sunday over "illegal" activities, in at least the seventh time Adnan Ghaith has been arrested in less than 18 months.

Fadi al-Hidmi was arrested near the Mount of Olives.

A video circulating on social media showed Ghaith, wearing rubber gloves and smoking a cigarette, being escorted by police out of his east Jerusalem home.

The Palestinian Authority says such arrests of Palestinian officials in occupied East Jerusalem are related to their activities in the city.

Jerusalem has remained Israel's capital since its founding.

Global law views both the West Bank and East Jerusalem as occupied territories, and considers all Jewish settlement-building activity there illegal.

Kamal al-Shakhra, the director-general of primary care at the PA Health Ministry, said his ministry is ready to receive returning workers and carry out coronavirus tests. In reality, Israel has extended aid to Palestinians and collaborated closely with the PA to confront the deadly pandemic. He said police searched the home and confiscated documents as well as "large sums of money". The Palestinian Authority has reported 143 cases and one death in the areas it administers. But it is highly contagious and can cause severe illness or death, particularly in older patients or those with underlying health problems.
