Disney+ India Launch Set for 3rd April; New Subscription Plans Detailed

Uday Shankar - President, The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman, Star & Disney India, said, "With the success of Hotstar, we ushered in a new era for premium video streaming in India". It didn't reveal a new date at the time but has today confirmed that Disney+ will officially make its India debut on 3rd April.

Disney+ content went live on India's Hotstar several weeks ahead of schedule, with the streaming service noting at the time that it was testing the waters. It is one of the most popular streaming services in the country. Gadgets 360 first reported on this when the new Disney+ Hotstar rebranding had (temporarily) taken affect. Wasn't it going to be delayed? That's naturally been brought on by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic - as was the delay - which has given rise to social distancing and more people staying at home, something Hotstar acknowledged in its new Disney+ Hotstar launch date announcement.

Uday Shankar, president of The Walt Disney Company APAC and chairman, Star & Disney India, said: "We hope the power of Disney's storytelling, delivered through Hotstar's technology, will help our viewers find moments of comfort, happiness and inspiration during these hard times". Disney+ Hostar plans to fill this void and attract some new eyeballs in the process. We have still attached a couple of screenshots showing off the new design. Both movies will be showcased in four languages: English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. This new service will also launch with fresh and slightly more exorbitant subscription plans.

Disney+ Hotstar Premium costs Rs 1,499 per year, and subscribers will get everything under the VIP plan as well as access to other English language content (apart from Marvel), latest American shows from studios like HBO, Fox, Showtime, and 29 Disney+ originals like The Mandalorian, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, and many others.

The Hotstar Premium price point, INR 1499 ($19.90) per year, will unlock Disney originals including The Mandalorian and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, as well as further US shows from HBO, Fox and Showtime. You do get all of the VIP content here as well, so don't worry about that. Disney will continue to offer a free tier with ads, and there's now a Disney+ Hotstar VIP plan that lets users stream their favorite shows and selected titles like the Marvel Cinematic Universe catalog, The Lion King, Frozen II, Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Mickey Mouse, Gajju Bhai, Doraemon, and Shin-chan in Indian languages.
