PFA calls for 'urgent meeting' with Premier League and EFL

After a series of meetings between the FA and non-league representatives failed to reach a consensus, the Northern League, Southern League and London-based Isthmian Leagues last night issued a joint statement confirming they had begun the formal process of terminating the season, while expressing "frustration" at the continued delay.

This decision will affect over 30 different leagues across the country.

While some clubs believe the final standings should be decided on a points per game average, others want the season to be declared null and void.

The second would be to decide all matters on how the tables stand now, which would mean Norwich, Bournemouth and Aston Villa being relegated from the Premier League and replaced by Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion and third-placed Fulham. However, a precedent has now been set in non-league football.

The loss of match-day revenue due to the suspension of English professional football has hit clubs hard, particularly in the EFL, and raised the prospect of clubs asking players to accept wage deferrals.

"Even if the FA were to extend, it wasn't going to be possible to complete remaining games, also subject to being allowed to socialise by May".

"Whether that is done on the basis of determining final placings via average points per game, or the season is declared null & void can not be decided until the National League decides how it wishes to proceed".

Doing so would help to ease the financial crisis at the top end of the game, with Premier League clubs reportedly facing a £762 million payout to broadcasters if the season can not be completed.

The FA are due to announce their next move to this decision in the coming days, as well as what happens regarding other non-league seasons and grassroots football. "Once a decision is conveyed to the leagues it will be consistent across the NLS system - if null and void is the FA decision there will be NO promotion or relegation for 2019/20 season".
