Confirmed COVID-19 cases in USA top 13,000: Johns Hopkins University

According to Johns Hopkins University's coronavirus database, the total number of coronavirus patients was 407,485 at 11.40 pm (IST) on Tuesday.

There are over 350,500 confirmed cases worldwide, with a death toll surpassing 15,300, while more than 100,000 have recovered, according to data compiled by the USA -based Johns Hopkins University. According to the database, 18,227 people have been killed by COVID-19 so far.

It took approximately 79 days for COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China, in late December, to get to 200,000 confirmed cases on March 18th.

The US recorded another 2,693 cases and 46 new deaths in the past day as the pandemic continues to expand in the country, although both the new daily cases and the new deaths fell from the highs of previous days. The death rate based on reported cases is now 1.2 percent - but the actual number believed to be infected is far higher, which would bring the rate down.

The COVID-19 outbreak has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Johns Hopkins University data shows the virus has now spread to 170 countries and regions.

That's an nearly 20 percent increase on the day before and is the biggest one-day spike since the outbreak began.
