Predicted heavy rain could also run the risk of further flooding, with 43 warnings still in place in England, six in Scotland and one in Wales following recent heavy rainfall.

The wind warning will come into force early tomorrow, at 3am, and remain in place until 8pm, while the rainfall warning will take effect at 6am and last until 9pm Saturday.

Over the weekend, wind gusts will widely exceed 50mph, the Met Office said, with gusts of over 60mph possible in coastal areas and exposed locations.

Paul Davis, principal meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "With Ciara the rain was heavy but swift".

Other companies say services could be affected by speed restrictions as well as fallen trees and debris on the line.

He said the snow which fell in parts of England following Storm Ciara is likely to melt as the rain arrives on Saturday.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "Our highways teams have been very busy this week carrying out repairs and assessing the damage caused by Storm Ciara, and there are a number of issues which we will be monitoring very closely as we deal with any impacts from Storm Dennis".

"As the UK's main insurer of farming and the countryside, we have a network of over 300 local offices that have helped policyholders get claims underway and sort out emergency cash and alternative accommodation if customers couldn't stay in their own homes, arranging for properties to be surveyed and repairs started without delay".

A landslip which has shut the Kilmarnock-Carlisle railway line near Holywood, north of Dumfries, since Monday will take another month to fix, Network Rail said.

Heavy rainfall is expected from 6pm today (Friday).

The Met Office has amber warnings for rain in pockets of northern and south-west England, and Wales from 12:00 GMT on Saturday until 15:00 on Sunday.

Storm Dennis will bring very heavy rain and strong winds to the United Kingdom this weekend, with a risk of flooding and travel disruption in some areas.
