French Open to be Federer's only clay-court appearance in 2020

Roger Federer will play the French Open as his only clay-court tournament this season, says his agent Tony Godsick. His last tournament, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year in the Miami Masters, which is on the 25th of april will begin. This is what his agent told Reuters.

The 38-year-old Swiss is playing in the last few years, however, the tournaments, and, in particular, graveltoernooien.

Unlike his main rivals, Federer, who won the last of his 20 Grand Slam titles in 2018 at Melbourne Park, opted out of the inaugural ATP Cup in Australia to spend more time with his family before launching his 22nd season on Tour.

He added a number of exhibition tournaments to his schedule at the end of 2019, in South America, Mexico and Hangzou, China.

Federer was the semi-finalist at Roland Garros a year ago before wasting two match points in the final at Wimbledon and advancing into the last four at the Australian Open a couple of weeks ago, losing only to Nadal and Djokovic in those three encounters.

Federer, who has won the French Open just once in his career, will not feature in any clay tournaments in the build-up.

Federer will try to defend the title in Dubai in two weeks, embracing North American swing in Indian Wells and Miami after that and taking nearly two months off to charge batteries for Roland Garros and grass swing that follows after that lone clay event. "I've been debating with my team for a few weeks now, months actually, what I should do in the summer time (of 2020) after Wimbledon and before the US Open", Federer had said past year. "My play previous year, it gives me the feeling that I was still able to do". The unseeded Indo-Canadian combine beat the Romanian-Dutch pairing of Tecau and Rojer 6-2 3-6 10-7 in the quarterfinals.
