Hyundai to co-develop EV platform with Canoo

The platform will be used for future Hyundai and Kia electric vehicles as well as for the so-called "purpose-built vehicles" of the automaker group.

The South Korean auto maker, Hyundai Motor Group, reportedly announced collaboration with Canoo in an effort to build an electric vehicle platform for its upcoming car models.

In the future, Hyundai Motor Group expects that the skateboard design will make for a simplied and standardized development process for Hyundai and Kia's electrified vehicle lineup.

It will be interesting to see how the new partnership will turn out and how this will impact the Hyundai and Kia EV plans for the future. "It is a real honor for us to help Hyundai explore EV architecture concepts for their future models".

The heart of Canoo's first vehicle, which looks more like a minibus than a traditional electric SUV, is the "skateboard" architecture that houses batteries and electric transmission in a chassis under the vehicle's cab.

The announcement of the investment forms part of HMG's US$87 billion (A$129.4b) investment over the next five years, with US$25b (A$37.19b) of that being spent by Hyundai on future technologies, and the same amount by Kia for electrification and future mobility technologies, with the end goal of achieving 25 per cent of sales made up of eco-friendly vehicles by 2025.

We already saw the Canoo skateboard and its first electric vehicle concept in September 2019. Canoo recently opened the waiting list for its first vehicle.

Hyundai has announced it will be collaborating with Los Angeles-based startup Canoo to jointly develop electric vehicles, Reuters reports. The first Canoo vehicles are expected to appear on the road by 2021 and will be offered only as a subscription. A bold design capitalizing on the space EV technology affords, catering to the needs of today's consumers.

Founded in December 2017 by a group of experienced automotive engineers and executives, the Canoo team has since been complimented by various experts from successful tech and vehicle companies.

The deal is the latest in a series of moves by Hyundai Motor Group to increase investment in next-generation vehicle technologies through partnerships with overseas startups.

Hyundai is confident about this architecture, which will help it reduce production and cost complications.
