As Aker BP mentioned in a press release, Spot has already been tested in simulated oil and gas environments and will start working at its facility this year itself.

As part of this, the four-legged machine will guard Aker's production vessel at the Skarv field in Norway while performing routine inspections - looking for things like hydrocarbon leaks and generating reports on the same.

Spot the robotic watchdog will help Aker BP to patrol its ships, watch out for leaks, and investigate areas too unsafe for human workers.

So far as Spot is concerned, Aker BP imagines the robot using its stereo camera system, obstacle avoidance systems and onboard sensors to detect and respond to gas leaks and provide onshore operators with a telepresence out at sea.

Among the robots involved in the initiative is Spot, the quadruped robot developed by Boston Dynamics. The company has tested these abilities in simulated oil and gas environments and says the robot proved capable of reaching locations that humans can not, reducing the risks to its workers and the overall safety of its facilities.

"We've worked with Equinor since mid-November to develop a possible technical concept covering the entire area and taking in key elements from the two previous concepts", Aker BP Chief Executive Karl Johnny Hersvik told reporters. CDF, a cloud-based industrial data operations and intelligence platform, integrates with existing IT and OT applications in the cloud, edge, and on-premise, according to the company. "By ingesting data collected by robots into Cognite Data Fusion, Aker BP engineers will be able to see it in context with data from across the company's operations and make data-driven decisions that improve efficiency and safety".
