It's Tucker Time! Michigan State lands Mel Tucker as head coach

He's a defensive-minded coach, who has run NFL defenses and was behind some of college football's best defenses under Saban again at Alabama and then at Georgia, before calling the shots at colorado. The addition of Tucker ends the Spartans' high-profile search to replace longtime coach Mark Dantonio, who abruptly resigned February 4.

Tucker and Michigan State agreed to a deal in principal to make him the program's next football coach, The Athletic reported late on Tuesday night. "We are excited about the upward trajectory of our football program and we'll get to work immediately hiring the next head coach to build on our momentum and lead our young men".

Tucker even tweeted out on Saturday that he was "committed to [Colorado] for #TheBuild of our program".

Tucker went 5-7 in his first year at Colorado.

Michigan State scheduled a board meeting for later Wednesday to formally approve the hire and a news conference with Tucker was scheduled for early evening. Tucker said simply of MSU. They had 7-6 records the past two seasons and were three games over.500 in the four seasons following their playoff appearance.

Tucker served as Ohio State's defensive backs coach from 2001-03 before a promotion to co-defensive coordinator in 2004.

"We're ready", Simmons said, looking at Tucker during a news conference.

Dantonio retired with a 114-57 record over 13 years. He spent only one season with the Crimson Tide, helping them win a national title. He has also been an assistant at Miami of Ohio, Ohio State and was defensive coordinator for three National Football League teams - the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears (also serving a stint as Jacksonville's interim head coach in 2011) before returning to the college game at Alabama in 2015.

The Spartans have slipped in recent years. This week, former Alabama assistant coach Mel Tucker announced that he would be Dantonio's replacement. He spent 2005-08 with the Browns - the first three as defensive backs coach and the fourth as defensive coordinator. But when MSU struck out on hiring Luke Fickell from Cincinnati, the school circled back to Tucker and offered him a contract that will reportedly double what he was earning in Boulder. Saleh is a former Michigan State assistant who is now the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and Shurmur, a former Spartans player and assistant, is offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.
